The Open Source Group Japan (Chairman: Shuji Sado) is pleased to announce its endorsement of the “Open Source AI Definition 1.0” (OSAID) developed by the U.S.-based nonprofit organization, Open Source Initiative (OSI).
The OSI, a volunteer-based organization responsible for managing the “Open Source Definition” and reviewing and approving Open Source licenses, launched the collaborative design process for OSAID in 2023. This initiative was in response to rising concerns over open-washing, increased attention to generative AI, and the EU AI Act, which includes explicit references to Open Source AI systems. Members of our organization participated in this design process as individual volunteers and actively contributed to public discussions over the past year, representing one of the most active voices.
On October 28, 2024, OSI officially released OSAID 1.0, and we, the Open Source Group Japan, formally endorse this definition. Chairman Shuji Sado conveyed the following message to OSI:
“Open Source Group Japan commends OSI for its leadership in navigating the complex process of defining Open Source AI, and we fully endorse the Open Source AI Definition (OSAID) as a key standard for open and transparent AI systems. The field of AI is evolving rapidly, and the need for a clear and consistent definition of Open Source AI has never been more critical. OSI’s OSAID marks a crucial milestone toward a future where collaboration and openness are the norms in AI development. Additionally, our organization has released Japanese reference translations for OSAID 1.0, a checklist for evaluating machine learning systems, and an FAQ. We hope these resources will facilitate a deeper understanding of Open Source AI systems in Japan.
